These disease resistant, high health apple varieties really give meaning to the phrase "An apple a day keeps the Doctor away".Many Heritage apples show high levels of flavonoids and anthocyanins (anti-oxidants) essential for good health. Recent research has indicated that these components may be beneficial in the fight against cancer. The market driven desire for fruit that looks good and has a long shelf life has meant that we have often compromised on flavour and vigour. Heritage Apple varieties have survived through-out the centuries because they show excellent disease resistance, making them ideal for the organic home orchardist. Many are called 'russet' apples which refers rough texture of the skin. Heritage Apple with large, russeted, yellow fruit blushed red. Very popular for cooking as it has a great tangy flavour but also can be eaten fresh. Considered one of the best apples for making sauce. Ripens towards the end of autumn.

Heritage Apple. Originating from Ireland in 1820, 'Irish Peach' (yes an apple called Peach!) ripens early in summer. The skin is green with faint red stripes and the flesh is high quality with a very good flavour. This apple will not store well and is best eaten straight from the tree. Deciduous.

An English heritage variety with huge, flat, highly coloured fruit with red stripes. Highly esteemed for culinary purposes. The flesh is firm, juicy and tart with the right blend of acid and sweet. When stewed the flesh breaks down to a 'froth'. Matures late summer to autumn. Deciduous.
