These disease resistant, high health apple varieties really give meaning to the phrase "An apple a day keeps the Doctor away".Many Heritage apples show high levels of flavonoids and anthocyanins (anti-oxidants) essential for good health. Recent research has indicated that these components may be beneficial in the fight against cancer. The market driven desire for fruit that looks good and has a long shelf life has meant that we have often compromised on flavour and vigour. Heritage Apple varieties have survived through-out the centuries because they show excellent disease resistance, making them ideal for the organic home orchardist. Many are called 'russet' apples which refers rough texture of the skin. Apple Belle De Boskoop MM106 Heritage Apple with Dutch origins dating back to around 1850. Large,russeted, yellow fruit blushed red. Apple Reinette Du Canada This heritage apple hails from France and dates back to 1771. It ripens very late in the season and stores exceptionally well.
